Are there any stipulations? Can I play some guitar and keyboard, and throw a bass line to it? Do we have to sing, or is it instrumental, or it doesn't matter?
+1 to Riff Driven's question. I've got several instruments I'd like to add in the mix, focusing on guitar, but I'd like to add a wider variety of instruments for depth. Another point I'd like to make is genre. While open-ended competition is fantastic, unfortunately there will be a high chance for bias in the judging. (i.e. A metal elitist isn't going to vote for a jazz or blues piece, regardless of how well done or skilled it may be, and vice versa...)
Karlboy, you're probably right. I'd like to rely on the belief that people will notice when they are listening to a really good piece of music and when their not. Anyway, it's open for discussion.
About other instruments, sure you can throw in keyboards, basslines, and so forth, the only stipulation is that the mp3 must have a line of guitar at least.
Ideas to turn the contest more fair when it come to judging?
Not really sure how to make the judging more fair, as long as it's posted as anonymous it should be fair enough, even though I'm sure I'll be able to tell who's playing when I hear it. If the people that I'm guessing are going to participate do, I'll be able to tell from their technique. Are you going to participate BMTuga? Since it's rated on kudos, I don't see why not.
Karlboy has an damn good point though, I was planing on playing something more metalish, because there's a lot of metalheads on this site, not that it's a bad thing, but I do think anything too sappy could hurt your chances.
Personally i'll give my kudos away considering the technic, creativity and the complexity of the track.
But yes, I guess my chances will be less than yours as I am considering recording an acoustic backind track with a e-guitar solo over it and maybe a few acoustic licks thrown in the middle to fill in the gaps. I'm guessing metalheads will turn their back on me =P
